Ottertalks Q&A with Kathy Zuk December 16, 2014 12:01

Clyde the Otter: Tell us a brief history of Rogue Aquatics.

Kathy ZukRogue Aquatics was established in 2011 but was previously Rogue Scuba.  We still hold the Rogue Scuba name and still offer the same great scuba service that the previous owners did.  We added several facets to the business including swimming lessons, water fitness classes, swim and scuba birthday parties, and pool movie nights.  We also do hydro testing of gas cylinders for not only divers but most of the fire districts and bottling companies in our area.

CTO: Seashells! Seems like the store has some history!

KZ: Rogue Aquatics and Scuba has been in this building for 10 years and the business has been in the area for over 20 years.

CTO: What is it like playing and working at your store?

KZ: I think that the employees here would tell you it’s a gas to work here.  I mean it’s swimming and scuba for goodness sakes.  We have a great time and great relationship.  I consider them my family.

CTO: Otters are known for our fishy nature. What is your shop known for?

KZ: Our store is quite large as dive stores go and we have quite a large inventory of both scuba diving equipment and swim equipment and supplies.  We also carry triathlete gear and some of the more difficult items to find and try on. Mostly we’re known for our great service, dependability, and our knowledge base of all aquatic sports.

CTOOtters brave the elements all the time. Tell us one memory of you “braving the elements”?

KZ: My bravest moment was my certification dives in the Hoods Canal area of Washington state.  Oh my gosh cold!   Blue lips, snot running out of my face and not being able to feel it.  Fingers so cold I couldn’t operate my equipment.  Worst dive of my life!  That was in 1998. I’m still diving!

CTO: Surf-fur is collaborating with Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society this winter to raise awareness about the condition of our oceans. Tell us a way that your store has given back to the ocean.

KZ: The Rogue River flows directly to the sea and we participate in river clean ups.  We also host dive socials where we invite guest speakers and many of them have some affiliation with concern of the sea.

CTO: Well thank you for saving our oceans and saving yourself!DatesforBrave
